THE VIRTUAL SCIENTIST GUEST LECTURE SERIES:

“The material was really well presented, interesting and relevant to what we are studying and we would love to do this again next year in this course if possible … it was great to be able to do something different and the kids really enjoyed it. ” -- AP Science Teacher, Catlin Gable School, Portland, OR

“The presentation today was a winner … The topic was solid and highly correlated to our standards.  The kids enjoyed  (it) … one girl in  particular was interested in the schooling and Dr. Olivier’s career pathway, which was great to see that her presence sparked or continued this young lady’s interest in pursuing science herself  … I look forward to fostering this relationship and to further … interaction between my students and ‘real’ scientists.”  -- Science Teacher, Calavera Hills Middle School, Carlsbad, CA

“The feedback is positive on our side.  Teacher and students enjoyed the experience.   We look forward to doing more with you.   Perhaps we can be the initial try out for all new scientists.  We would be interested in doing this in all subjects. Glad we could be part of this.”  -- Principal, Fort Lauderdale Prep School, Ft. Lauderdale, FL

“The students were really excited about (the) talk. It seems to me that, they got a boost of enthusiasm for science from the Virtual Visit and as their teacher, I thank you for that!” --Biology Teacher, English High School, Boston, MA

“Almost every child asked a question because everyone wanted to 'talk to a real scientist'. We had never done Skype before in the building and it was a huge hit with the teaching staff also. We are making plans to use more outside speakers … to enhance our instruction."  -- 6th grade teacher, Barberton School District, Barberton, OH

“Skyping with an actual engineer not only increased the students’ motivation, but gave them a real sense that what they were doing was important. -- 7th Grade teacher, P.S. 21, Brooklyn, NY

“Professor Howard was great.  The students enjoyed the presentation and the chance to ask questions – her energy and message about careers in science was valuable. One girl said Professor Howard was ‘really cool’”.   -- Biology teacher, Match Charter School, Boston, MA

“The students were so excited and it was informative and interesting to see what a scientist actually does. I have several students in my class who are really interested in science and have even mentioned becoming a scientist, so seeing her in her lab with some of the materials she uses was great! My students …received an experience that I would not have been able to provide them.”  -- Science Teacher, Hope Elementary School, Carlsbad, CA

CLEVELAND MIDDLE SCHOOL
DVDs can help take our students' learning experiences further by transporting them via the magic of digital technology to the microbial world where scientific battles are waged against new diseases such as in Viruses: Investigating Viral Epidemics; or to where an archaeologist unravels through 3D terrain maps and laser pantographs clues to ancient Troy, as in Digital Archaeology.   Students are far more immersed in their studies when they can experience the world beyond the written pages of their textbooks and see it live, in full color and in three dimensions.  Studies also find that programs such as these enable visual, motor & auditory learners to better appreciate the diversity and complexity of our world.  Undoubtedly, the DVDs will be a welcomed, dynamic tool for our science teachers.

As you know, an understanding of science is vital to a nation whose future depends heavily on technology.  Certainly complicated concepts required by the state's curriculum, will become more accessible and authentic through this addition to our collection and yearly 1064 middle school students will benefit from having these DVDs available in our library.  It is gratifying to know there are businesses within our community which understand and value such multi-media resources and are willing to give generously to help support our students' education.

Again, thank you so much,

~Grace M. Dyrek, CMS Librarian

Dwight  Morrow High School
"...We have been receiving Science Screen Report video tapes and accompanying materials for many years now. I have talked to all of our science teachers and they are all very impressed with the quality of these video tapes.  I have also viewed these high quality tapes and can attest to the presentations as well as the educational soundness of the material...
Your Science Screen Reports are actually superior to the videos I have previewed  which are on the market today. Amazingly, they have cost us nothing at all. Therefore, I wish to let you know how doubly valuable these videos have become to us. Thank you very much for this worthwhile public service..."
-Reginald L. Williams (Media Specialist)

Orangeburg Consolidated School District 4
"...I would like to personally thank you for your generous gift to the students of our district. The Science Screen Report for Kids, elementary level series, will give our teachers additional tools to help students get exited about science. The teacher guides have a "friendly" format that will encourage teachers to use this wonderful resource.

Science is an important subject for students to learn because it involves so much of what we do in our daily lives. Yet, students are sometimes reluctant to do their best in science. Since this is a generation of students who love to be entertained, the videos should enhance what teachers are already doing to capture and hold the attention of these bright young people..."
-Rosa W. Kennerly (Asst. Supt. for Instruction)
Paradise Valley Unified School District
"...This video series is a connection to current research and discoveries in science that benefits our students. In these rapidly changing times, relevant information is meaningful, and the series certainly fills the void between textbooks and current events. The guides that accompany the videos enhance the entire program. As a result, our schools utilize it on a  regular basis..."
-Judith K. Dewalt (Director, Instructional and Curriculum Resources)
McLean County Unit District No. 5
"...Video programs like the Science Screen Report...teachers present ideas that are often difficult to describe via discussion, reading items in the Internet, or a textbook. Furthermore, the Teacher's Guides help each video become an in depth lesson that generates deeper understanding and increased interest. I am confident that the Unit 5 students will greatly benefit from this contribution..."
-Bruce M. Boswell (Director of Secondary Education)
Lake Washington School District
"...The videos are an outstanding science resource for our students and teachers. In fact, the Science Screen Report videos rank at the top of the request list for supplemental science materials! They have also been utilized by our home school population. Teachers are amazed by how well the videos stimulate the student's interest in the subject discussed..."
-Margene Michael (Curriculum Library Manager)

Box Elder School District
"...As the new curriculum director for Box Elder District, I would like to thank you for your generous donation of the Science Screen Video Report series. The students in our district will benefit greatly from having not only very current science information, but information presented in an exciting and thought provoking format.

The topics presented in the Science Screen Report series correlate directly to the concepts outlined in the Utah State  Science Core Curriculum. This correlation will be very helpful as teachers try to find innovative ways to present material to engage students. The fact  that many of the topics also relate to current environmental issues such as conservation, energy, and engineering will also help students see the relevance and application of science concepts in their lives now and in the future.

The fact that we have permission to copy these video programs will make this a gift that will impact all of the students in Box Elder School District. Again, we appreciate your generosity and concern for our children. If there is anything we can do for you in the future, please call my office..."
